 Jim Moore of Urban Innovations was looking for a way to ensure that every resident of the townhouses he builds has a choice view of the downtown Dallas skyline. Using traditional architectural floor plans, that was no simple task. At a National Homebuilders Association's convention a few years ago, Moore learned about ArchiCAD design software, which lets architects design in three dimensions. "It blew me away," he says. Moore now uses ArchiCAD to orient his townhouses so that the rooftops, balconies and windows maximize the residents' downtown views. More »

Within a house, parents often focus on being able to see the rooms their children will use most. Roberto Castanheira, a designer with RC3D in Dallas, says he’s had several recent requests from parents who want to put media rooms downstairs, where they can keep an eye on the kids, instead of upstairs, which has been the general practice. "Sight lines can determine how people interact in the house," Mr. Castanheira says. "It’s whether you can see someone, or whether you have to get up and go talk to them." More »
