Did you catch the recent Dallas Morning Newspaper article titled '3D comes to home design'? Local Dallas architectural design firm RC3D, Inc. specializes in Three Dimension (3D) to create an accurate 'virtual' model of your building on the computer.

As a homeowner, realtor, remodeler, builder and developer - you can 'see' your design in 3D with more interactive exchanges during the design process. Changes are instantly made in the virtual model resulting in time and cost savings, with elimination of errors and omissions.

Not only has client demand for green buildings doubled in the past year, but architects' own attitudes toward their personal and professional ability to impact climate change, and their obligation to do so, also improved. Forty-two percent of architects reported that clients are asking for green building elements on a majority of projects, and that 47 percent of clients implement green building elements in their projects.

66 percent of architects say that client demand is the primary influence on their green building practices. They believe the primary reasons clients request green building elements are reduced operating costs (cited by 60 percent of architects), marketing, and market demand. However, 72 percent of architects are concerned that the added first costs of green design may be an obstacle for clients.

If you are in the home inspection or construction consulting industry you are probably aware of the upcoming changes that the Texas Residential Construction Commission (TRCC) is implementing regarding requirements for code inspections on residential structures built in Texas. Starting September 1, 2008, the law requires code inspections on all home construction and remodeling projects constructed initiated after that date in unincorporated areas or in municipalities that do not conduct such inspections. It will now be required that the builder or remodeler secure inspection at three stages of construction which are defined as:
  • Foundation: Inspection required prior to placement of concrete.
  • TopOut: A framing and mechanical systems inspection before placement of insulation and drywall, also know as a pre-cover inspection.
  • Final: Inspection performed when construction is considered substantially completed and prior to occupancy.

On August 5, developers may apply for planning and construction grants for green affordable housing. Grants up to $50,000 cover planning and construction expenses including additional costs of architectural work, engineering, site surveys and costs associated with items such as a more efficient HVAC system, green materials and energy efficient appliance.

Green Communities offers two national rounds per year. Grant funds up to $50,000 per project will be available beginning August 5th for developers committed to providing green affordable housing. Applications must be received online by September 18th. Awards are expected to be made by the first week of November.

Click here for more details on the planning and construction grants.

Grants for up to $5,000 to assist housing developers with integrating green building systems in their developments and engage in a series of discussions for green design possibilities. Green Communities will award planning grants to affordable housing developers to coordinate a green design charrette.

Click here for more details on the charrette grants.

The grants are open to 501(c)(3) nonprofits; public housing authorities; tribally designated housing entities; for-profit entities; and for-profit entities participating through joint ventures with qualified organizations. The applicant and the development team must demonstrate their qualifications to successfully carry out the proposed development.

RC3D Architectural Design Services
RC3D Commercial and Residential Design designs the concept, then creates a Virtual, 3-Dimensional (3D) Model of the site and building that is subsequently used by the client to plan, design and develop a successful project. The 3D Virtual Model is used to create photo realistic perspectives, elevations, renderings, virtual reality (VR) models, VR tours, VR scenes and website images. Inherent marketing collateral and images are created during the visualization process, for pre-sales, advertising and marketing purposes.

RC3D Commercial and Residential Design is skilled at harnessing technology to facilitate communication between the designer, builder, and client where possible, to achieve design excellence. This is done either through producing a typical set of construction documents or combining these documents with a virtual 3D model.

Buying green is just the first step in reducing the environmental impacts of automobile use. Your choice of vehicle is most important, but how you drive and how well you maintain your car, van, or light truck will also make a difference.
  • Avoid "jack rabbit" starts and aggressive driving. Flooring the gas pedal not only wastes gas, it leads to drastically higher pollution rates. One second of high-powered driving can produce nearly the same volume of carbon monoxide emissions as a half hour of normal driving
  • Think ahead. Try to anticipate stops and let your vehicle coast down as much as possible. Avoid the increased pollution, wasted gas, and wear on your brakes created by accelerating hard and braking hard.
  • Follow the speed limit! Driving 75 mph instead of 65 mph will lower your fuel economy by about 10 percent, and can dramatically increase tailpipe pollution in many vehicles.
  • When possible, plan your trips to avoid rush hour. Stop-and-go driving burns gas and increases emissions of smog-forming pollutants.
  • Combine trips. Warmed-up engines and catalysts generate much less air pollution, so combining several short trips into one can make a big difference.
  • Take a load off. Carrying around an extra 100 pounds reduces fuel economy by about 1 percent. Take a few moments to unload your cargo area.
  • If your vehicle has it, use overdrive gear at cruising speeds. When driving a manual transmission, shift up as soon as possible. Running in a higher gear decreases the rpm and will decrease fuel use and engine wear.
  • Try using the vents and opening windows to cool off before you turn on the air conditioner. Air conditioner use increases fuel consumption, increases NOx emissions in some vehicles, and involves environmentally damaging fluids.
  • Unlike many older cars and trucks, modern vehicles don't need to warm up and they have automatic chokes, so you don't need to step on the gas pedal before starting the engine.

Habitat gardening is becoming very popular, it is a type of landscaping and gardening that uses native plants and water elements that help to maintain the natural ecosystem of the area. Creating an edge effect (as in the edge of forest or natural habitat) by using plants of all sizes laid out in a step down effect to allow all sort of spiders, and bugs that are useful in your garden, refuge. Water features like ponds and fountains provide bird baths and frog sanctuaries, and calming sounds of nature.

If you haven’t considered a vegetable or herb garden before, they can be quite therapeutic and rewarding. Money is saved by providing your own, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and beans but it also helps to regenerate areas of land that have been deprived of valuable nutrients.
