Sustainable walls part 3

Green product selection is a key component of sustainable design. Green products can be defined as those that reduce, recycle and renew - the three R’s of sustainability.

Choosing the correct wall system is part of good sustainable design. Today we are going to talk about structural insulated panel (SIP) wall systems, their benefits and drawbacks.

Structural insulated panel (SIP) wall systems are an engineered pre-fabricated sandwich of structural sheathing such as oriented strand board(OSB), cement fiber board, or various types of metal surrounding a solid foam insulating core.
SIPs provide a high R-value(R20 or higher) with the benefits of a high strength-to-weight ratio. Panels are produced in widths up to 4' and lengths up to 24'.

SIPs Features & Benefits
Energy Savings - Save 40%-60% on energy costs over stick-framing
Safer - SIP buildings provide 2 1/2 times the added strength compared to regular stick-frame building.
Fast Construction Cycle - Installation of custom SIPs takes hours instead of days resulting in substantial labor savings. Less skilled labor is needed for construction.
Healthier Indoor Air - less air infiltration, this means a healthier home
Quieter - SIP homes substantially reduce exterior noise
Reduced HVAC Costs - Better insulation means a reduction of furnace and air-conditioner size and the ability to use smaller ductwork.
Reduced On-Site Material Waste - Substantially less waste is produced on the job site because most of the framing is already completed in the factory.
Quicker Construction Cycle - Framing, insulating and sheathing are completed in one step. Rough openings are pre-installed and bucked out. Once walls and roofs are in place, shingles, doors & windows can be installed to secure the structure sooner.
Less dimensional lumber used. Superior insulation in building reduces the need for heating fuels and creates less pollution in the air.
Better protection against floods and storms
HERS (Home Energy Rating System) score of 86 or higher
SIP systems can help homeowners pursue Energy Star® ratings and energy-efficient mortgages.

SIPs Drawbacks
Requires proper panel fabrication (proper panel gluing, pressing, and curing is critical to prevent delamination)
Panels must be flat, plumb, and have well designed connections to ensure tightness of construction
Though SIPs offer ease of construction, installers require training for the system
Fire-rating of SIP materials and air-tightness of SIP installation affect the system’s fire safety
Potential insect and rodent mitigation issues depending on SIP materials and construction
More expensive and may need to be transported greater distances.
Steel SIPs require an insulation break between the exterior of the panel and the exterior shell of the home or building.

SIPs are a safe, strong, energy efficient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly construction method. Any additional costs can easily be recovered through lower insurance premiums and energy costs.

That Shanghai version may be cmniog at the end of April may be cmniog through again.You will be part of that version' helping me to sip through some tea.shangrila-la cannot seem to figure out what spring means,Jeff
